Over 15,000 food hampers are distributed annually, with children making up over 30% of the people receiving food. The number of people requesting a food hamper each week has markedly increased over the last decade making the food bank an essential service for our island. At the Harvest Food Bank, we are always striving to increase the choices available to the food bank recipients. The most common foods disbursed through a traditional food bank are canned goods, dry staples and processed items. Through the Harvest Farm and Second Harvest, we’re growing and saving fresh produce to increase the diversity and nutritional value of the foods we are able to offer. With seniors confined to their home, we quickly created our meal delivery program to support those in need and provide a safe, no contact check in. Along with prepared meals, a food bank hamper was also delivered to seniors who requested it. This need continues and demand for our program has been increasing. All meals are prepared in our licensed, commercial kitchen, located at the Fulford Hall, and overseen by our Red Seal chef, Brody.
